Results: Leiden Open 2016

On the 27th and 28th of February the Leiden Open took place, an international competition in which 56 teams took part. The competition was convened by Ybo Buruma and Floris Holstege, and the CA-team consisted of Bionda Merckens, Jamie Jackson and Omer Nevo. The results are as follows:

Champions Dan Lahav (Tel Aviv) and Daan Welling (Radboud).
Best Speaker Michael Dunn Goekjian (PEP).

Novice Champions Anna Neuber and Sebõk Kata (DK Wien).
Best Novice Speaker Jeroen Wijnen (Willibrord Gymnasium).

The motions were as follows:

Round 1 – This House would ban fortune telling.
Round 2 – This House would directly elect members of the US Supreme Court.
Round 3 – This House believes that schools should motivate children to believe that anyone can succeed through hard work regardless of their background.
Round 4 – This House would grant those diagnosed with terminal ilnesses the right to access treatments that have not completed clinical testing.
Round 5 – This House believes that post-conflict governments should recruit rebel soldiers into state armies.

Novice Final – This House would allow the armed forces to unionise, strike and collectively bargain.

Semi Final – This House would allow individuals to sell their right to sue to third parties.
Final – This House would enact an immediate democracy.
Infoslide: Definition: Immediate democracy is a method in which citizens can change their vote at any time. The number of MPS given to each party is allocated on a daily basis and represents the current support percentage of the population. In this system, there are no elections but the number of MPs from each party can change every day.
